(English version available in the end)

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School
Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Last week, I introduced you the Chinese Culture Quiz Competition organised by the Victorian Chinese Schools Association and presented you the question banks online. Many parents have raised their interest and asked me how to participate the competition. Learning Chinese language is not only an encouragement of social communication, but also more importantly for Chinese background students, a recognition and inheritancce of Chinese culture. The competition is divided into four groups: Y1-3 group, Y4-6 group, Y7-9 group and Y10-12 group. The question banks for each group are accessible on the school website and you are more than welcome to join the competition by clicking here. The due date for registration is 29 August. The first-round competition within the school would be scheduled in early September and the top students would attend the final competition as our school’s representatives.
One of our school’s most popular event-online Chinese Culture Camp is coming soon. 2024 Chinese Culture Camp – Zhaoqing Camp is scheduled from 2 September to 11 September. The camp is focused on listening stories about Chinese culture and history and learning local culture of Zhaoqing complemented with videos, information sheets and pictures. Zhaoqing Camp has been organised for three times at XJS and students this year could benefit from story excerpt of Journey to West, stories of idioms and famous Chinese, exploring Sanxingdui Ruins, Chinese culture cartoons, Chinese traditional sugar painting and Chinese paper crafting.
In the past few years, about 2200 students have participated in the online Chinese culture camp learning local culture of various Chinese cities and areas. During the camp, students are expected to listen to stories, watch videos and complete the assigned learning tasks under the instruction of volunteer teachers one hour per day. The learning tasks might be writing a short paragraph, drawing a picture, making a handcraft, playing a role of the story learnt or making a presentation or performance. Students who actively participate in the daily activities and complete the assigned tasks would be awarded as the Excellent Participants.
I would recommend students to participate in the event as a whole class to make it a complementary learning experience of their Chinese learning. It could also be regarded as a kind of practice before attending the Chinese culture quiz competition. This event is totally free of charge. Please click here for registration.
Moreover, I would like to emphasis the importance of campus security to all the members of our school community. In the last few weeks, parents have reported that strangers approached young students offering them candies and even inviting them to enter their cars. These strangers might be adults or senior students. Parents have raised serious concerns about it and I fully understand their worries. Luckily, teachers reported the incident to our school’s child safe officer immediately and we have asked all the yard duty officers to scan the campus for any suspicious person and no student has been injured. However, it has raised alert to all the community members of the school.
At XJS, all the teaching and admin staff and volunteers have received child safety training organised by CLV and the school also has various child safe policies in place. If any student, parent or teacher notices any safety hazard, please report it immediately to the class teachers, yard duty officers on site, child safe officer onsite or come to the school office directly. I would also like to remind all the parents to leave the campus after dropping off your children for child safety concerns. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.
I wish you all the best and let’s see you on campus on weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu, Principal
