(18082020)Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Term 3 has gone half-way now. We are now doing remote learning for all year levels since the start of Stage 4 restrictions. In the last few weeks, the attendance for our online classes has been very positive and full attendance has been noticed in several year levels and campuses such as Noble Park campus, Mt Waverley Junior campus and Western Chinese Language School. We are also pleased to find out that 98% of primary level students have joined our remote learning every week. It shows that our teachers, students and parents follow the restrictions seriously as the rest of Australians while keeping on learning and working from home and it also shows our determination to fight against the coronavirus together.
Term 3 would end on 19/20 September. Based on the current policies, we would stay under Stage 4 restrictions until 13 September and then we might go back to Stage 3 restrictions, which means it would be very likely that we would keep on online learning throughout Term 3. For VCE 12 students, we would follow the instructions from DET and VCAA on the arrangements for the last week of Term 3. We would try our best to support our VCE 12 students making their best performance in the VCE exams.
I would like to share with you how our teachers prepare their remoting teaching for our students. Before the decision was made by DET that all the community language schools conduct remote learning, we established online teaching requirements and arranged online teaching training for over 200 teachers. 16 professional development trainings have been provided throughout the school and within campuses and multiple online teaching seminars have been organised for responsible year levels. We’ve also encouraged teachers to participate in 35 professional trainings provided by Community Languages Victoria. The Chinese education authorities have also provided great support in our online teaching such as Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation of China and Shanghai Overseas Friendship Association who have provided various resources on language teaching skills and Chinese culture understanding. Our teachers have attended 61 seminars provided by Chinese education experts and gained great support in online teaching and learning. You might not believe that a tiny online learning activity shown for students in class might come from hours of work behind the screen. And I believe the high attendance rate has already demonstrated the acknowledgement of our teachers’ efforts from our students and parents. I would like to thank them for their trust and support.
It’s true that remote learning is different from classroom learning. Our teachers have encountered the greatest challenge in technology and teaching methods. Every class is now an open class for observation. Please understand that teachers are facing great pressure. I have received some complaints from parents claiming that their children have not been paid enough attention in class. I understand parents’ concern on their children’s learning and appreciate their willingness to communicate with us. As a matter of fact, class management in online environment is a new issue in education. Teachers are still learning and the school is pay great attention on it too. Last Wednesday, I proposed a Zoom meeting workshop inviting teachers to voluntarily share their remote teaching experience and the registration reached the 100 limits very soon and many more were on the waiting list. It obviously shows how dedicated our teachers are to improving our remoting teaching and benefiting every single student in class.
Let’s stay strong and safe and see you online this weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu
