(05/05/2023)Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School Principal’s Message

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School
Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Last week was the first week of Term 2. Due to the enrolment of some new students, we had to rearrange some classes to ensure the quality of teaching. Thanks to the support and cooperation of the parents, the class rearrangement went smoothly.
First, I would like to report some good news from one of our previous students. According to the report of 7 NEWS, last Friday night, 12 Victoria’s best and brightest young minds were celebrated at the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards. and one of XJS’ previous student 27-year-old doctor Victor Lin took out the top honour, the HR Gurus Career Achievement Award for his cancer research and community charity work. Victor Lin is a full-time doctor at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Victor co-founded the Youth Australians’ Cancer Initiative, which provides a platform for young people to assist others in understanding cancer better. He also co-founded Teaching for Impact, an organisation that assists high school and medical students in Victoria and New South Wales through free online tutorials and lectures and a state-wide mentoring program. Victor started his Chinese language learning at XJS from young age and got high score in his VCE Chinese exam and obtained the All-Round VCE High Achiever Award. When the parent told me this good news, it reminded me Victor’s sister, Shijia Lin, who also got full score in 2010 VCE Chinese exam and is now working as a doctor as well. Their parent told me they were so lucky to have wonderful Chinese teachers at XJS and the Chinese language learning has contributed a lot in their all-round development. I’m very proud of Victor and Shijia and I believe our students would make great achievements as they do in various lines in the future.
Secondly, I would like to let you know that 2023 Chinese Culture Camp (in China) would resume later this year.
XJS has encouraged students to participate in Chinese Culture Camp in China since 2011 and about 700 students have benefited from the event up to 2019. The Chinese Culture Camp in China has enriched students’ experience in Chinese traditional culture, arts, places of history and Chinese gourmet, encouraged students to learn more in Chinese language and culture and provided great support in VCE students’ detailed studies. The event has made great impact on young people’s culture recognition for students with Chinese culture background and has been largely applauded by students and parents. Due to pandemic impact, the event has been suspended for three years and turned into online event. As the world is recovering, the event would resume from 1 July 2023 and about 3000 students with Chinese background all over the world would be given opportunities to participate in the event in various provinces and cities in China.
With the great support from the community leader from Fujian and leaders from Fujian Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, XJS has obtained some places in Fujian Chinese Culture Camp in September. We are also striving for some places in Guangdong Chinese Culture Camp in December. The event is non-for-profit and the detailed information including costs, itinerary and dates would be announced soon.
According to the FROC requirements, students over 12 years old approved by local Chinese language schools are permitted to register for the event and students are not accepted to register directly to FROC. The students who have been awarded Excellent Participants in Online Chinese Culture Camp in the last few years would be given the priority to register for the event.
If you are interested in the Chinese Culture Camp in China yet have never participated the Online Chinese Culture Camp, you are more than welcome to join our online event and try to get the Excellent Participant award (you are expected to listen to the stories and watch videos online everyday and complete your learning tasks). Please click here for online event registration. For more information about the previous online Chinese Culture Camp, please visit our school website at www.xjs.vic.edu.au.
Look forward to your participation. Let’s see you on campus this weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu, Principal
