(English version available in the end)

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School
Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Welcome all the returned and new students. According to our attendance record, last weekend, 3500 students attended school, which is very positive. It shows trust from our students and their parents as well as their recognition and focus on Chinese language and culture. I’ve noticed that many non-Chinese background families send their children to XJS and we would provide them necessary support in their Chinese language learning.
This Saturday is the Spring Festival, the New Year in Chinese tradition. Some parents would like to transfer their children from Saturday to Sunday due to their family celebration for the New Year and some parents ask whether there will be a day off on Chinese New Year. I fully understand their concerns, however, there are only 8 teaching weeks in Term 1 and we have to keep on teaching and learning this weekend. As there are less classes on Sunday with less teachers available compared with Saturday classes, we might not be able to transfer students from Saturday to Sunday this weekend. I hope parents and students could understand it.
Last weekend, some students requested to change class time or transfer classes and some classes had to be split due to their large size. I’ve also known that there are quite a few students who are still overseas visiting their extended family members and they would return to XJS soon. Therefore, we might need to adjust classes in the following weeks based on the actual situation of the week and some students’ personal requests might not be able to be satisfied. We would let you know the situation if your requests have to be denied and we are very sorry for it.
On Monday, I attended a CLV training session for all the CLS principals and I would like to let you know some important information received:
1. Child safety. All the CLS schools are child-safe community language schools accredited by DET with all the relevant child safe policies. All the teachers, admin staff and volunteers are holding valid Working With Children Check and have to attend child safe training and sign Child Safe Code of Conduct. Community language schools have to ensure the child safety on campus and have zero tolerance to any language and physical abuse to children.
2. Student enrolment. DET requires all the students of CLS schools to register their information each year and the information provided should match what are provided to their childcare, primary and secondary schools (including name, gender, date of birth, etc). All the CLS schools are expected to submit students’ information to DET by 18 March and the information would be used for DET funding application and public liability purposes.
3. Language curriculum. DET requires all the CLS schools to deliver language teaching based on the language curriculum of DET and VCE Single Study Providers is required to deliver VCE teaching based on the curriculum of VCAA. Moreover, VRQA would regularly check the teaching and campus safety onsite.
XJS would observe all the relevant teaching and administrative requirements of DET and your understanding and cooperation would be much appreciated, especially the work of student enrolment. We’ve moved most of our work online such as online enrolment and online bank transaction and over 95% of parents have done it very well which we sincerely appreciate. I’ve also noticed that it brings some inconvenience for parents who are not confident working online. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to visit our offices onsite and our admin staff would be happy to assist you. I also would like to hear your feedback and suggestions to improve our work in the future.
This weekend is the Chinese New Year. I wish you a prosperous Year of Dragon. Keep safe and healthy, have a happy family, enjoy your learning and wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu, Principal
