关于第五届 “ 华文杯 ”2025年维州华裔青少年中华故事会大赛等事宜

(English version available in the end)

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School

Principal’s Message

Dear teachers, students and parents,

So far in Term 3, the overall teaching order of the school has been running smoothly. The Year 12 students are about to enter the 100-day countdown to the VCE final examinations. At present, under the instruction of our teachers, the strong support of parents and the assistance of volunteers, students are strengthening their training in oral skills, reading comprehension and specialized writing. The entire Year 12 is filled with vitality and energy. The students are full of confidence and enthusiasm, showing a positive and uplifting spirit that brings a strong sense of hope and motivation.

In the past two weeks, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) conducted a comprehensive on-site inspection of our school’s VCE teaching (including teaching staff, curriculum and teaching arrangements), campus child safety (including child safety policy development, staff training and implementation measures), as well as emergency response procedures. Our school met the requirements in most areas, which is the result of the collective efforts of all members of the school community, including teachers, parents, students, admin staff and volunteers. During the inspection, we were also informed that, in light of the newly passed child safety legislation, we will need to further improve our child protection measures after September 1. In accordance with the Department of Education’s requirements, each of our campuses has appointed a Child Safety Officer. Through the campus coordinators and Child Safety Officers at each campus, our school will provide regular training to all staff to ensure the safety of children and the overall safety of the campus.

Today I am writing to introduce an important competition related to Chinese learning.

The 5th “Chinese Cup” Chinese Storytelling Competition for Chinese Youth in Victoria, organized by the Victorian Chinese Schools Association, is about to start in 2025.

Theme of the event: To promote the outstanding traditional Chinese culture, inspire a sense of identity and belonging among Chinese youth in Victoria, and encourage them to use language as a bridge to gain a deeper understanding of the long history of China, its rich and diverse art forms and its profound humanistic spirit. To achieve this, the 5th “Chinese Cup” — 2025 Chinese Storytelling Competition for Chinese Youth in Victoria will be held in the form of “learning through storytelling.”

This event is organized by the Chinese Schools Association of Victoria, which is dedicated to promoting Chinese language education outside China, the inheritance and dissemination of Chinese culture abroad and the prosperity of multiculturalism in Australia, with strong support from the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne.

The event aims to cultivate the language expression skills and logical thinking abilities of Chinese youth through various forms such as knowledge quizzes and shadow puppet performances, while enhancing their understanding of and enthusiasm for Chinese culture. At the same time, it provides a diverse platform for showcasing talents, exchanging ideas and promoting culture. Participating students will engage in in-depth exploration and creative expression around themes of Chinese culture, which serves both as a training in language skills and as an extension of cultural understanding.

The event details

1.     Eligibility and Registration: All students currently enrolled in Chinese schools officially registered with the Victorian Department of Education may voluntarily register for the competition through their own school and participate in the preliminary selection organized by the school.

2.     The competition is limited to team participation by schools; individual entries are not allowed. For team awards, each member of the team will receive a certificate or a medal.

3.     Competition Scope: The competition’s question bank is uniformly prepared by the Secretariat of the Victorian Chinese Schools Association and covers Chinese idiom culture. During the finals, the quiz questions will be drawn on-site by the event organizers and judges.

4.     The Secretariat provides the following reference list: (For reference only for the quiz and performance segments; senior students are not limited to the following recommended list.)

(1)  CCTV series program: “Interesting Stories of Chinese Idioms” (https://tv.cctv.com/2025/03/28/VIDEphaq7ugvmC7ZVGRrxD7X250328.shtml)

(3)  Published by Commercial Press: “200 Chinese Idiom Stories – Pocket Book”

5.     Please register with your class teacher before August 24, 2025. The class teacher will report to the school, which will then organize the preliminary round (mainly a written test).

6.     Competition Categories: (1) Years 1–4; (2) Years 5–8; (3) Years 9–12. (The categorization of participants will be determined by the submitting school, generally based on the students’ day school year levels.)

8.     Awards: Winners will be eligible to participate in the “Chinese Culture Camp” Winter Camp in January 2026 (tentatively in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other locations).

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Hu, Principal
