(English version available in the end)

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School

Principal’s Message

Dear teachers, students and parents,

Hello everyone! Starting from this weekend (2/3 May), our school will resume normal classes every weekend for the rest of Term 2. The last teaching week of Term 2 will be 20/21 June. In Term 2, high school, VCE Chinese Year 11 and 12 students will be scheduled to take some SAC exams based on the requirements of VCAA, and other year levels will have exams arranged uniformly by each year level (in principle, they will be arranged in Term 2 Week 8) to provide feedback on our teaching effectiveness. There will be no tests or examinations for early-learning and prep classes.

Last weekend, although the school was closed due to a public holiday, our teachers participated in teaching seminars for each year levels. The teachers collectively prepared lessons and jointly discussed teaching methods, classroom management methods, etc., with the aim of continuously improving the quality of our teaching.

Today, I want to talk to you about a very practical issue here. Now AI has had a great influence and impact on our language schools and language teaching. Some students can complete homework very well with the help of AI and can even present writing works of a certain level. Their interest in accepting classroom teaching has obviously declined. We clearly understand that if our teachers do not learn and keep up with the times, we will not be able to cope with the learning needs of the students. Our teachers have a sense of responsibility for inheriting Chinese culture in Australia’s multicultural society and are determined not to be left behind. They would rather start from scratch and enrich themselves as students. In the afternoon of the Anzac Day, they participated a professional lecture on AI given by top Australian AI experts invited by the Australian Chinese Professionals Club CPCA. In the evening, they also participated in an online training course on “How to Use AI Skills to Teach Chinese Well” organized by the Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation of China and hosted by Beijing Longzhimen Education Group. I believe that our teachers as quick learners will make our classroom teaching up-to-date and adaptable to students’ needs.

In addition, recently, our teachers also participated in training courses on how to help students with ADHD and autism. According to estimates from relevant medical research departments, nearly 5% of the more than 1 million primary and secondary school students in Victoria suffer from ADHD and nearly 3% suffer from ASD. The government attaches great importance to this and provides financial and human resource support to primary and secondary mainstream schools. If those estimates hold true, then it is normal for us to have some students with ADHD and ASD in our 3,500-student community language school, and they should be commended for giving up their weekend breaks to study Chinese. However, due to our lack of financial and human resource support from the government, we are unable to provide professional support to those students. This is where our teachers feel stressed. Therefore, on the one hand, we will continue to maintain open communication channels with the parents of those students, and on the other hand, we will also try our best to give teachers the opportunity to participate in some training so that they can do a better job in helping students. At the same time, we hope that all members of our school community, including teachers, students and parents, will pay attention to students with special needs and use our care and love to help them learn Chinese well. Let our campus become a common home for everyone.

I wish everyone good luck in learning and working in Term 2. See you on campus at the weekend!

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Hu, Principal
