(English version available in the end)

Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School

Principal’s Message

Dear teachers, students and parents,

Spring has arrived. I wish you all a good health and success in work and studies.

In Term 3, we navigated the challenges of the winter season and faced sudden, emergency power outages and school closures. Throughout this period, all school sectors and members demonstrated exceptional collaboration and remarkable resilience in the face of crisis. By uniting to overcome these obstacles, we not only showcased the solidarity of our school community but also gained renewed confidence in our ability to further advance the school’s development.

Today, I would like to update you on matters regarding end-of-term exams, the writing competition, the reading lecture, recommendations for holiday activities and Term 4 make-up class arrangements.

First, although we do not schedule unified exams for Term 3, each year level has made its own specific arrangements. For instance, Year 1 includes a handwriting contest combined with oral and written Pinyin exercises; Year 2 features a handwriting contest along with oral and listening practice; Year 3 has a writing contest and written exercises; Year 4 includes oral assessments (idiom stories) and basic knowledge exercises; Year 5 involves vocabulary dictation and oral practice (reading texts aloud or reciting two ancient poems); Year 6 has oral and written exercises; Year 7 holds a vocabulary dictation contest (covering 50 designated words); Year 8 has listening and written exercises; Year 9 holds a 100-word dictation contest; the Advanced Chinese class has oral and written exercises; and students in Year 10 and above engage in written assignments and individual speeches. Meanwhile, VCE Y12 students have already successfully completed their academic competitions ahead of schedule. (Due to the unexpected cancellation of classes last week, please pay attention to notifications from your class teachers regarding specific arrangements for each year level.)

Secondly, this year’s World Chinese Student Writing Competition has commenced. Our students have consistently won awards over the years; last year, a student secured the top prize, and another student’s writing journey was highlighted at the awards ceremony—an outstanding achievement. The competition is once again divided into four age groups: the Junior Group (9 years old and under), the Primary Group (10–12 years old), the Intermediate Group (13–15 years old), and the Senior Group (16–18 years old). Requirements: the content must be wholesome, substantial and express genuine emotion. There are no restrictions on genre or subject matter; participants should choose a clear perspective and writing style, create their own titles and ensure originality (no formulaic writing or plagiarism). The essay length must be between 200 and 2,000 words.

1. Junior Group: Theme 1: My Favorite Chinese Toys; Theme 2: My Traditional Chinese Clothing

2. Primary Group: Theme 1: A “Journey” Inspired by an Ancient Poem; Theme 2: My Grandparents’ Memories of China

3. Intermediate Group: Theme 1: A Day Without “Screen Time”; Theme 2: Giving New Life to Old Objects

4. Senior Group: Theme 1: My Hometown on My Phone; Theme 2: The Light of Digital Intelligence: Advancing for the Greater Good; Theme 3: Decoding Civilization Through Cultural Relics; Theme 4: The Millennial Silk Road: A Convergence of Civilizations

Please click here to read the specific requirements for the competition. The submission deadline for entries from our school’s students is 28 November (late submissions will not be accepted).

Third, we are highlighting “Shakespeare’s Cat,” a non-profit Chinese-language literary community based in Melbourne. On Wednesday, 9 September 2026, 7PM-8PM (Melbourne time), an online, non-profit reading promotion event will be hosted tailored for Chinese-speaking families in Australia. Focused on the book *Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window*, the event will feature guest speakers ZHAO Hui (a researcher in reading education) and ZHU Xinwei (a children’s book editor at Shanghai Translation Publishing House). We especially welcome teachers from Chinese language schools, parents and students to attend; participation is free and voluntary, and there is no requirement to read the book beforehand. Please click the link to register (advance registration is recommended).

Fourth, the Melbourne Zee Cheng Khor Moral Uplifting Society will once again host the “Little Gentleman” camp during the Term 3 holidays (28 September – 2 October)—an event highly popular with and praised by both students and parents. Focused on the virtues of “gentleness, kindness, respect, frugality and humility,” the program features activities such as learning and critical thinking, preparation for Chinese speech contests, Chinese dining etiquette, Mid-Autumn Festival traditions, the Chinese Zodiac, Chinese geography, calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, music, dragon dancing, dance and organized fun games. It offers children a rare and joyful holiday experience. Enrolment is limited to 30 participants on a first-come, first-served basis; please click here to register: https://zeechengkhor.org.au/young-virtuous-person/.

Additionally, the make-up classes originally rescheduled for 3/4 October—intended to compensate for the closures at MWSC campus caused by a power outage on 28/29 August—have been adjusted again. This change follows feedback from many parents who stated they would be taking their children to China during the holidays to visit relatives for the Mid-Autumn Festival and would be unable to return in time for the classes. After consulting with the host school MWSC, we have decided to reschedule the make-up classes to 12/13 December (effectively extending the Term 4 schedule by one week). We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Let’s see you on campus this weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Hu, Principal
