(English version available in the end)

Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Last Sunday (1 September), the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne organised a Teachers’ Day Reception inviting the Chinese teacher representatives from local primary, secondary schools and universities in Victoria. The Teachers’ Day has been observed to pay respect to educators and teachers on 10 September in China since 1985 and this year is the 40th anniversary. The invitation from the Consul General Xinwen Fang, the Vice Consul Generals Dongyuan Liu and Xiaodong Chen has showed their respect to all the teachers and acknowledgement to the contribution the educators have made in Chinese language education in Australia.
The Chinese language education in government schools and universities started in Melbourne from 1960s and has turned well-developed if not early developed among western countries. In Victoria, there are quite a lot primary and secondary schools offering Chinese language lessons with huge number of students who are interested in Chinese language learning. In a survey published two years ago on The Age, over 90,000 primary and secondary school students were learning Chinese, making the language of Chinese the top learnt community language in Victoria. The first Chinese school in Melbourne started in 1909 and later closed due to the impact of White Australia Policy. Nowadays, there are dozens of Chinese language schools with about 18,000 students, making the number of Chinese language learners the top among all the community language schools in Victoria. It makes us so proud as Chinese language teachers.
Before the event, a short music video named Chinese Culture in Strokes was presented. The Chinese youngsters have been showing their understanding of the beauty of Chinese characters and their respect to Chinese culture with their beautiful vocals. The music video is produced by Mirror Drama Studio and directed by Xiaoguang Song. Please click here to enjoy it. I would like to mention the lyric of the song is written by one of our senior Chinese teachers Mr Dongfeng Chen. The lyric shows teacher Chen’s strong writing skills, appreciating the beauty and broad and deep meaning of Chinese characters and indicating the purpose of Chinese language education in inheriting language and culture. I would like to present my sincere respect to Mr Dongfeng Chen. I hope you enjoy the music video, understanding more in Chinese characters and being motivated in Chinese language and culture learning.
This weekend is the test week of the term. Students of all year levels except early-learning and prep students would sit end-of-term exams this weekend. I wish you all the best in the exams.
By the way, as usual, the selective entry tests for Year 1-12 Accelerated Chinese Program would be scheduled in mid-November (in Term 4) and the tests are free of charge. Please pay attention to the test notice in Term 4.
Let’s see you on campus this weekend.
