(24/03/2023) XJS Chinese School Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message
Dear teachers, students and parents,
Term 1 is coming to an end soon. This weekend, all the year 1 – 11 students would attend the end-of-term exams and Year 12 students’ exams are scheduled on the next weekend. The Year 11 and 12 exams would be conducted according to the requirements of VCAA and the results would be recorded as requested by VCAA. For Year 1-10 students, their exams would be conducted according to the requirements of Victorian Curriculum-Languages of DET and test results would be used to reflect students’ learning progress and plan for future teaching.
I would like to let you know that on Monday 20 March we have submitted the funding application to DET including the operation of the school and students’ enrolment information which involves checking students’ full name (should be the same as records in their day schools and on their passports), date of birth (in the format of dd/mm/yyyy), their day school names and campus names. The workload of information checking is huge within limited time and thanks to all your support we have completed this work on time. I would like to present my sincere appreciation to all the teachers, admin staff on campus, students and their parents for their wonderful contribution without which we couldn’t check the information of over 3700 students within a few weeks.
According to our records, apart from some class teachers, our admin staff have made about 1000 phone calls checking some key information with parents. We’ve noticed that many students’ first names used in their day schools are different from those shown on their passport and some students’ Student ID names are different from those on passports as well. DET requires us to double check students’ name with their records in day schools and on passports as well for funding purposes which has brought us great trouble. We will notify DET the facts we have noticed. We’ve also noticed many primary level students have shown their day school names as ‘Mt Waverley Secondary College’ which is obviously incorrect. We rent Mt Waverley Secondary College for Chinese learning on weekends and students’ day schools are those they attend Monday to Friday. It has taken us some time to ask for students’ correct day school names with parents. Another common mistakes we’ve found is the format of date of birth as some parents used to record it as mm/dd/yyyy, however, the DET’s format is dd/mm/yyyy. Anyway, we’ve picked up various mistakes and have to make a lot of phone calls to double check the information with parents. Let’s learn the lesson and get it improved next year.
I would like to thank you again for supporting us in information checking (some parents called back immediately after hearing the message left for them). It again shows great contribution of each community members to our school and we sincerely appreciate it.
In the end, I would like to remind you the safety issue again. Up to now, most parents have observed the parking regulations in and outside the campus and set up a good example for their children. However, very few parents have parked their cars without reading the parking signs nearby or stopped cars at non-stop area and get parking tickets. If you believe you have received a parking ticket incorrectly, please contact the local city council for reviewing. Please observe the parking regulations all the time to avoid unnecessary fines.
Keep safe and healthy and see you on campus this weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Hu, Principal
